This seal is located at the front of the crankshaft as it protrudes out of the front of the engine block. Its purpose is to keep the oil from leaking through the back of the engine. The rear main seal allows the crankshaft to exit the engine case so it can bolt to the flywheel or flex plate and transfer its energy into the transmission. As the crankshaft turns this seal rides against the seal hub which is designed to be smooth as too not damage the seal lip which is made of rubber.
